"FLY-AWAY" PETER CAN UPSET ALL

Says McDONALD BAILEY

In slightly more time than it takes to read the head- line of this article, the great thrill of the indoor athletics meeting at Harringay at the end of March will have come and gone. I'm thinking of the 50 yards sprint in which I have a feeling some big reputations may be tem- porarily upset.

You see, a dash of 50 yards is not just a matter of sprinting one half of 100 yards. There's more to it than that. It's very much a question of psychology.

In the 100 yards, the top class sub-consciously may sprinter feel that it doesn't matter Over». much if he is away to a com- paratively slow start-he can make up for it long before the tape is broken.

In the 50 yards dash. Not so The race is over olmost before it is started and the performer has to adjust his mind to con- centrate on on Impeccable, supercharged sla:l without put- ting a toe wrong.

Thn is not so easy as t sounds, which is why a man with terrific Initial speed which fades out over the second half of a 100 yards sprint might well upset a greater runner over the shorter

distance.

Man who could bring about such a turn-up is Doract school- masie: Peter Whaley, whose great speed over the first 50 yards at the last AAA champlon ships shook me almost to the point of pants. But lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place and I don't intend to be caught napping this time.

LEFT THEM STANDING

I am

reminded of the freed Jesse Owens, who was described as slow away when running the full 180 yards. But when it came to a 50-yard effort the "Buckeye The revised Scottish Cup Bullet" would leave

There are going to be plenty of thrills in the longer races as well. For instance, the 800 yards invitation race should be quite a spectacle, with long legged Arthur Wint. negotiating the small clrcult at full speed.
