The Grand National

London, Feb; 3.

Mrs Lurline Brotherton's Freebooter, the winner in 1950, has been set the top weight of 12 stone seven pounds in this year's. Grand National, to be run al Aintree, Liverpool, on April 5, and faces a task which has not been performed for over 80 years.

It was in 1919 that a top weight last won the Grand National, Poethlyn carrying 12 stone, seven pounds to victory to win the race for the second year in Succession.

But Freebooter has preserved all his fire and spirit and is still unquestionably one of the fest steeplechasers scen In Beltala in recent years.

in the past two years.

Apart from Freebooter, there la nothing really outstanding the higher-weighted division.

Cottage Rake, Irish triple winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, has 12 stone, two pounds act but like Silver Fame, who is 12 stone, he looks more likely to go for the Cheltenham event again.

Statecraft, owned by Mr John White, sister of the late Lord Mildmay, has been allotted 12 stone on the basis of his Victory in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Pork on Boxing Day.

He suffer's from kidney trouble and the harley water which he given to keep him in trim does not seem likely to Inspire him to victory Aintree with this weight.

BETTER PROPOSITION

The late Mr James V. Rank's Shargreen, yet another Irish challenger, looks u better pro- position with 11 stone, 12 pounds to carry, four pounds less than last year, though he has

dis- appointed Irish hopes in the fast two Nationals, falling on both occasions.

On the same mark is Mr George Hemsley's eight-year-old gelding, Shauf, who is a winner over the Aintres fences and kas most impressive record over the past two

two years.
