Polly From POW Camp
London, Jan. 13. They have only to shout "Here's the Japs" at Waverley Cottages, Lochore, in Scotland, and one member of the household will Immediately take cover, preferably in somebody's Jacket pocket.
That's Polly, the parrot, found in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp seven years ago. by ‘Artiy» owner. Alec Meldrum. Polly's cage was a hole scraped in the soil under Alet's bed, and there the bird was hidden at every approach of the guards, When-
ever this happened, Alec would shout: "Here's the Japs" and Polly would either dive into her "underground" cage or in one of
Aler's pockets,
One day Polly was seen by the
guards who tied her wings and threw her into the fire. But when they had gone, Alec pulled her out and nurred her with oll stolen from lamps and wrapped her in scraps of cotton wODI obtained at the risk of Alec's life, Polly made a miraculous recovery to continue to enliven the days. of the prisoners until the hour of ilberation.
