Why we say By and large.

This vague phrase is used, especially by public speakers, to express a vague idea, namely, that the speaker is not sure that he is correct in de- tail. It comes from sail- ing-days when the order to sail "by and large" meant that the helmsman need not keep the ship close to the wind but might keep a point or two in reserve, in case of accidents. The order therefore implied a de- gree of tolerance and in- accuracy.

Dispute Over Land In The New Territories Gardener's Appeal Against Judgment Dismissed

The right to a number of lots of agricultural land in Fanling, New Territories, was disputed before the Full Court, comprising the Chief Justice, Sir Gerard Howc, and the Senior Puisne Judge, Mr Justice Gould, this morning, when an appeal was brought by a gardener against the judgment of Mr Justice Scholes. The appeal was dismissed.

The appellant was Fung Chok-lam, gardener of the On Poe Farm, Fanling, against whom Mr Justice Scholes awarded judgment in an action for possession of the land brought by Macy Peter Wong, married woman, of 38A Bonham Road,
