STORING OF DANGEROUS GOODS

Fire Brigade's

Difficulties

Explained

The disclosure that the Fire Brigade does not possess sufficient personnel to permit constant and thorough check-up on whether combustible mate- rials were being illegally stored on squatter areas was made this morning by Mr W, J. Gorman, Chief | of the Fire Brigade.

He told the China Mail that it was laid down by law that anyone wishing to store or make use of combustible materials must have a permit. On principle, permits were not granted to anyone liv- ing in squatter areas because the conditions were highly unsuitable.

However, said Mr

Gorman

the Fire Brigade did not possess to ensure

An adequate staff

that this law was being kept.

It would be a very big job, he added, to go roun

round A square mile

of squatter huts checking up.

The most they could do was in give talks to the squatter camps by means of a loud-speaker, warning them of the hazardous conditions in which they lived and the necessity for reporting anyone known

be storing dangerous goods.

10

At the same time, lectures were given on how to behave in the event of a fire outbreak.
