History was made at Southorn Playground yesterday, when almost 3,000 people were treated, to world class badminton by
the greatest galaxy of stars ever to have visited Hongkong. It was the first time, too, that the Southorn playground has been used for badminton matches.
As expected, the local players were completely outclassed by their Malayan visitors, who gave an astounding display of accuracy and speed.
Chief attraction of the night was undoubtedly Wong Peng Soon, the current All-India, Danish, All-England, Malayan and unofficial World Champion.

amathes, but employed mainly his A. Piruz and Wong Peng-soon,
Piruz surprised everyone pre- sent by taking the first six points with some beautiful aggressie play and smashes. From then on, however, he was completely subbued by the sheer wizardry
of the Champion, who
con
trolled the rest of the game with marvellous footwork, and

switch over to aggressive play.
It has been generally re- marked that mesi of Wong's victories were achieved through his ability to adjust himself to his opponent, and yesterday he gave another example of this, keeping Piruz on the de- fensive in the later part of the game.
THE MOST EXCITING
The most exciting match of the evening was, however, the Doubles exhibition
game between Chan Kon Leong and A. Piruz, the current Malayan Doubles Champions, and Wong Peng Soon and Tan Jin Eong. The importance of combine- tion in Doubles play was never more evident than in match.
this
The Champions, adopting the side-by-side eombination, played with
perfect understanding, whereas Wong and Tan, who played with the tront-back arrangement, were obviously handicapped by their having seldom played together.
Taking the spotlight in this match was veteran Chan Kon Leong, and on his display yesterday it is no wonder that he is regarded 35 the best Doubles player in Malaya to-
day.
Chan
won the Malayan Doubles tille the record num- ber of four times in 1937, 1938, 1939, and 1951 and the Malayan Mixed Doubles title in 1948. 1947 and 1949. Piruz made an ideal
partner for him with his dazzling speed at the net.
The other star of the evening was Ool Teik Hock, the 1948 Malayan Champion and the 1948 Ail-England Doubles Champiin.
It may be remembered that in the 1948 All-England Singles Championship, Ool Was the only player to take the doubtable Dave Freeman
three sets.
