In a quiet, unostentious way, there is being built up in Hongkong, as our staff reporter discovered this week, an efficient as well as vital segment of the Colony's defence and security machinery. How this is being done is described below. The story concerns

The

Auxiliary

Medical Service

Until the beginning of this year, the AMS was not a unit on its own, but part and parcel of the Essential Services Corps. Although recruiting started in a small way in 1949, it is chiefly the last nine months that have been responsible for the present force of over 1,500 volunteers.

More than 400 conscripts, the first batch for the AMS, are expected to start their training in groups of about 50 sometime during the next month. But people not eligible for conscription, and especially 200 women for Auxiliary nurses, are badly needed. Those already in the medical service, who are being directed as British subjects, will probably be earmarked for the AMS anyway. technicians "Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical and trained clerical assistants are particularly welcome," says the Director.

On trial is Godfrey Denis Turney, 25, probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police, charged with malicious wounding of a woman, Cheng Shu-kuen, and the youth Wong. It is alleged that on the night of September 20, during a hawker raid in Cooke Street, Turney seized a hawker and then drew his gun and fired over the man's shoulder. The bullet went through the left shoulder of the woman and lodged in the boy's chest.

The Hindu word "champna;" meaning to press, is the origin of the English "shampoo,” The west owes much to the east and part of the debt is the art of mos-
