Outer bras by American bra manufacturers show considerable versatility this year. Many are designed to be worn strapless or with straps. Some can be verted to halter necklines. Others have einsticised collars that can be worn on or off the shoulders. All are designed for sunbathing and outdoor sports. They are generally in Holid

colours, to blend or contrast with shorts, slacks and skirts. Black and white are special favourites, Ruffled

and cuffed tops provide softness in many numbers.

NE of the surprises of "couture week" als that Hardy Amies still favours the straight, unpleated skirt. Pleats, in some form or another, have crept into the collections of all other London designers, but in Paris, the pendulum has swung even further to the opposite extreme, and produced a stiffened, petti- conted fullness, reminiscent of the New Look of 1947.
