SOMERSET NEED 65 RUNS FROM EIGHT WICKETS TO BEAT SOUTH AFRICANS

Taunton, Aug. 2.

Somerset, with eight second innings wickets standing, needed 65 rùni to become the first county side to beat the South Africans on this tour at the end of the second day of their match here,

Somerset's good position was largely due to a fine knock of 107 rung not out scored by their captain, Stuart Rogers, which enabled them to make 305 runs in reply to South Africa'a 235 runs.

FESTIVAL STAKES Derby Winner Disappointed

In A Puzzling Race

English horses took the honours in the £80,000. Festival of Britán Stakes at Ascot and confounded the critics who said, when the race was first mooted, that it would be a gift for the French. The result also confounded the experts who wit-" 'nessed some of the most startling reversals of form seen in a big race for a long time.

Once again it was that big race wizard, Charlie Elliott, who was first. past the post. A big, though not a rècord, crowd, on a blazing hot July afternoon with Ascot at ita gayest and greenest, had seen the equine celebrities in the paddock. Bob Murphy Steps In Ahead Of Cockell For A Title Fight

blone predicted that Don Cockell, would have to walt for his tilt at Maxim for the world lightheavyweight title, in view of the recent success of Bob Murphy, the Irish-American. Now the news is through that Murphy has, in fact, secured a title fight against Joe for August 22,

It should be an excellent fight. Murphy, from all accounts, is a tear-away fighter with a killer's punch. Maxim himself has got some rent punches tucked away, too, as I found to my cost, nearly 18 months ago, and is, in addition, a very fine boxer. Whether his defeat by Charles will have unsettled him or not is dif cult to say. What I do suggest, from my own experience with Maxim, is that an early attack by Murphy may well be decisive.
