LEN HUTTON'S CENTURY OF CENTURIES

By ARCHIE QUICK

Once upon a time Yorkshiro's cricket team had a pair of great opening batsmen named Brown and Tun. nicliffe. They once made a first wicket, stand, of 564 against, Essex. Years later there came another pair, Holmes and Sutcliffe, and they scored 555 runs also against hapless Essex.

The spotlight of fame has switched and the mantle has now fallen on Hutton und Lowson. As yet though one is the master and the other the pupil, and it was very much that way when I was privileged to sit in the pavilion at Kennington Oval, scene of so many of his batting triumphs, and watch Hutton join the illustrious company who hava scored a hundred centuries.
