ENGLAND ALL OUT FOR 311 AFTER ONE DAY'S PLAY IN THE SECOND TEST MATCH
London, June 21.
With all their first innings wickets standing, South Africa will begin the second day of the second Test match against England, at Lord's tomorrow requiring another 308 runs to lead on first innings.
England were all out for 311 rune today and in reply South Africa had made four runa for no wicket by the close of play.
A good South African attack made England fight for their runs today, but In spite of the early loss of Len Hulton, England pursued an enterprising policy and although their total looked comparatively small by modern cricket standards it could prove sufficient to bring the victory England need to avenge the one South Africa snatched at Trent Bridge.
Three England batsmen, Denis Compton, Willie Watson and John Ikin, rose to the occasion,
runs in 80 Ikin showed himself a worthy opening batsman in making 51 minutes. He never allowed the bowlers to gain a complete mastery and after he left Compton and Watson not only mude the best stand of the day by adding 122 runs for the fourth wicket but also divided the honour of hitting the top score, 79
runs.

EXCELLENT BOWLING South Africa must be praised for their excellent bowling The tall, fair haired Cuan Me-
bigger to Carthy prevented sal by dismissing Hutton, Reg Simpson, Compton and Geoffrey Evans for 76 runs and the 40- year-old Geoff Chubb excelled himself in the oppressive heat by finishing off the tail with five wickets for 77 runs,
RELIANCE ON MANN Nourse, the South African captain, placed so much rellande on Mann that when he called for Van Ryneveld to take his first turn in the attack he put him on at the pavillon end, which meant that he would be trying to turn his leg-breaks up the slope,

South Africa one up and four to play. That is the position at the end of Direcha, L. Brezny: M. A. Grimpel, the Brat Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. For the tourists it is a happy state of affairs. Not since the victory by Wade's team in 1985 had South Africa inflicted defeat upon an English team In this country. Appropriately enough, it was one of the heroes of that 1925 victory, Dudley Nourse, who led the tourists to their second triumph at Trent Bridge.
England, on the other hand, may feel that the weather was, more than partly to blame for their defeat. South Africa, batting for nearly the whole of But the first two days, put themselves in an apparently invulnerable position. England, by skilful batting, were well on the way to a first innings lead when week-end rain came along to take a hand in the proceedings.
