The trial of Don Manuel Garreten, Chile's former Am- bassader in Turkey, opened here today before the Chlef Presiden- cy Magistrate, Oscar Brown.

With Garreton in the dock was the French Marquess Guy de la Passardiere. Both are accused of smuggling 166 kilos of gold, worth $350,000, into India in December, 1950,
