THREE BRITISH BOXING CHAMPIONS

Heavyweight Champion Jack-Gardner, who will take on Cesar Brion of the Argentine.

OXFORD HAVE THREE POTENTIAL OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS IN 1952

Says ARCHIE QUICK

It was quite an experience to sit in a coffee shop of Oxford's famous High Street and stroll along the river walk of Magdalen College with three athletes who are all potential winners of Olympic honours at the Helsinki Games next year.

There I was with deep-thinking Roger Bannister, destined to be a doctor, whimsical Nick Stacey, who is to become a clergyman, and cheery Chris Chataway, one day to be a schoolmaster--ull of whom may write their names on the scroll of athletic fume.

FIGHTING TONIGHT

*

London, June 4,

Three British boxing champions, Jack Gardner (heavyweight), Don Cockell (light heavyweight) and Handolph Turpin (middle- weight), will be in action on the open-air programme at the White City Stadium, London, tomorrow night,

Juck Gardner, the holder of the British, British Em- pire and European titles, may have the hardest task against Cesar Brion, the

Brion does not oppear carry much punching power, but he displayed a snappy left hook in training. He may give Gardner trouble in the

early rounds, but the British Cham- pion, with a stone advantage in weight, should wear him down. Cockell, who has been very active and has Improved in every fight since winning his title, may punch too hard and often for Nick Barone, one the two Americans on the bill. It Must Be Difficult Giving An LBW Decision With All Those Skirts Flapping About

So much has been written recently about the improved standard of women's ericket that I've been having a look at it. Well, in it as good as all that? My answer Is an emphaile "No." Women's cricket, judged by men's standards by which the cricketing public ia educated, is "Not there yet." It just hasn't grown up.

Now perhaps you may think I'm being a little unfair in criticising so harshly in a senson which so far, in England, has been really notable only for its wintry conditions, but, making all allowances, I cannot bring myself to think of what I saw as being at all startling.

AFTER the war it became evident that there was de- finite cause for concern about the future of English cricket. That England teams of pre-war standard would take time to re-build was to be expected.

But what was much more disturbing was the lack of playing facilities and the shortage of competent coaches, and these prompted the formation by the MCC of the Cricket Inquiry Committee.
