FIGURES

ACHIEVEMENTS OF SHIPPING INDUSTRY

The Demand For Tonnage Continuing

Remarkable figures bearing on the achievements of the British shipbuilding industry have lately been published.

At the end of the March quarter the order book totalled 5,002,000 gross tons. Of this total, 65.5 per cent was for British owners and 34.5 per cent was on foreign account.

Nearly two-thirds has still to be laid down. 'At March 31 last, 58 per cent of the order book was for tankers, the next largest proportions being 17.7 per cent for cargo liners and 12.3 per cent for car- go tramps.
