Appeal Against Magistrate's Judgment Fails

An appeal against their conviction and fine of $1,000 each on charges of attempting to export prohibited goods without a licence, and attempting to export unmanifested cargo, brought by Lau Wah, 23, accountant, and Chan Tai, 56, master of a lighter, was dismissed by the Chief Justice, Sir Gerard Howe, in the Appeal Court this morning. The appellants were fined by Mr. Winter at Kowloon Court on March 21, following the seizure of 704 drums and 379 tins containing 170 tons of oil (said to be valueri at over $100,000), on board the lighler Tak Ming off Green Island on February 14. The Magistrate ordered confiscation of the whole cargo.
