A-PLANE WILL BE WORLD'S LARGEST

energy airplane is also likely to be the world's big- gest alreraft.

Following the nows that the American General Electric Company have been given the job of designing Atom Engine No. 1, there is a good deal of apeculation as to which firm will build thin, sirframe Into which the atomic energy motors will be fitted.

It is expected that the work will be given to one of three American Arms-Consolidated- Vultce, the builders of the great B.36 bomber: Douglas, who produce the Globemaster transports: Boeings, builders or trio Superfortress, the Stratocruiser and new jet bomber.

All three have their main plants in the Los Angeles area. Snag No. 1

The atom engine is likely to follow normal Jet engine practice except that the com- pressed air will be heated by atomic energy instead of by burning parafin.

SNAG No. I is the weight, chielly from the thick pro- tectors that will have to be built round the atom motors to stop the deadly rays reaching the crew.

SNAG No. 2 is that having no expendable fuel, the atom- driven airplane will have much the same landing weight as at take-off.

Only a very big airplane, larger than any yet built, sould carry the weight that will be necessary.

It wil be several years yet before we see atomic-energy strplanes flying.
