Rebuffed By Truman

Washington, Apr. 6.

The White House said today that there has been no change in policy against the use

of Chinese Nas tionalist-troops to help win- the Korean war.

The Presidential Press Secretary, Mr Joseph Short, rebuffed indirectly a sug gestion by General Mac Arthur and said the policy

tionalist troops in the Far East remains unchanged. He added that as far as he knew no change of polley is in prospect.

Mr. Trygve Lie, United Nations Secretary-against using Chinese Na General, declared today that, as there was no sign of any Communist peace move in Korea, the United Nations had no alternative but to continue the battle with all the force it could safely commit. He was speaking at his last press conference here before leaving on a trip to the Middle East.

Mr Lie still hoped that there would be a cease- fire soon, but added, “This is only a hope. It is not a prediction."

He recalled that there were many channels through which cease-fire negotiations could be

IR Ralph Stevenson, the British

returning Ambassador, is Cairo today to resume negotiations with the Egyptian Government on revision of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty. It is to be fervently hoped that he will carry with him instructions of a nature that will demonstrate the time has passed for any further vacillation by Britain on this subject. Britain's, weakness towards Egypt has been almost incredible. During the war Bri- tain defended hor from invasion and confined the enemy's efforts to the desert. This was accomplished with British and Commonwealth troops. The Egyptian Army contributed nothing: but behind the screen of British and Commonwealth forces the Egyptian civillans earned masses of sterling which were piled up as a huge debt from Great Britain to Egypt. These were for services rendered; but the counter-service which Britain. rendered should, when the war was over, have been brought into the balance. That was never done, and when the issue was debated recently in the House of Commons, there was no suggestion from the Government that the latest
