CUPERFICIALLY, THE CAR-

-DINAL-by-Henry-Morton Robinson, is the story of a Boo- ton tram driver's son, Stephen Fermoyle, from the time he was ordained priest, in 1918, until in 1039 he was appointed "cardinal.

But in fact it is a picture of the Roman Catholic Church, Robinson himself a Catholic, neither attacks nor defends. Ho simply describes; and the Incl. dents, characters, conflicts and detall which go into his descrip- tlon make both a whole picture and an absorbing story,

Every detall, whether it la o description of the confessional or of the election of a Pope, can- tributes to the story; and every incident, character and confilet contributes.

Conflict? For a normal man Uke Stephen there was inevit- able conflict between his Vow of celibacy and his love for the beautiful Glijalana.

There was conflict between his bellef that to kill an unborn baby was murder and his desire to save the life of his sister. Perhaps the solution of these confilets is not all convincing.

He has just made a flying return visit to Washington to "get things or- ganised" before taking over from Lord Tedder. Elliot has return-
