With First Marine Division on the Central Front,

Mar. 1.

The Marines jumped off shortly after dawn on Thursday toward Hoengsong, punching into what is believed to be the main Red central defence line in central Korea...

The Marines struck towards series of deep peaks overlooking Hoengsong west of the Twinnan River. First reports said the Marines were "meet- ing some resistance" from small arms and automa- tic weapons. The Marines began moving out on the attack at 7 a.m. It was fully underway by 7.30 a.m.

The Marines attacked in bright sunlight after spending the night in a cold drizzling rain. Their first objective was a rugged half-bald hill which the South Koreans had captured several times pre- viously and then lost to grenade throwing Chinese at- tacking up the steep slope.

Basic Issues Made Clearer THE role which Russia has played to

date in the Korea war is fairly clear: she has supplied the North Koreans and the Chinese Communists with weapons, materials and military advisers. Less obvious are the Krem- lin's future intentions; nor were they clarified by Premier Stalin's recent interview. He held out no more hope of trying to bring about a settlement than has been offered by his; spokes- men in the United Nations. Neverthe- less, his statement did make the issue. plain. The formula is familiar: the way to have peace is to surrender. The Soviet dictator, however, amplified this to the extent of stating the alternative,. when he said: "If Britain and the United States reject, finally the proposals made by the People's Govern- ment of China, the war in Korea can only end in the defeat of the interven tionists." The statement attracts interest, first of all, for itq quasi- ultimative character. Stalin's sentence is merely a alightly longer way of saying "surrender, or gisé."" This can be read as a reassurance to the Chinese, Communist "volunteers" that the Soviet Union will not forsake them, if one likes so to interpret it. It seems, certainly, to be directed to domestic Communist consumption if Russia and· ́ China' rather than to the major part of the free world, which has already shown its unwillingness to be intimidated. *Practically significant, also, was tho
