LAST WORD IN SOCCER LUXURY

IS ARSENAL

The last word in soccer luxury is Arsenal Stadium. Not only is the name Arsenal known all over the world as standing for all that is best in English football, but the club's ground and offices are the show piece for all soccer-minded visitors to this country.

To trace the development of that reputation and the luxurious ap- pointments that have grown with it one has only to go back to the appoint- ment of Herbert Chapman as secretary-manager of the club In 1925,

The success story started in his first season. Arsenal were in the Inst eight in the Cup, second in the League. They had achieved nothing like this before in all their previous 39 years' history.

Then in 1927 Arsenal were in the Cup Final for the first time. They lost then to Cardiff, but they were back at Wembley three years later to win the Cup.

The season after that they won the League for the first time. In fact, that proved to be just the first of five champlon- ships in eight years.

Unfortunately Mr Chapman did not live to see the continuation of his good work. Next Saturday, when Arsenal start a bid to keep the Cup by playing Carlisle United in the third round of the 1950-51 competi. tion, is the anniversary of Mr Chapman's death in 1934.

Today the man who was schooled in his ways, Tom Whittaker, then trainer, now so successfully following in his footsteps. as secretary-manager, offers what he calls a simple New Year's resolution:

That Arsenal will continue to be a team that everybody in football can be proud of, that they will continue to live up to the great traditions of the club, by their sports- manship, the quality of their football, and the relations between club and player.”

ON THE CAT

When the Italian footballers were here last the season they nicknamed me "Il Gattone" big cat. Funny thing is I learned a lot from watching cats, studying those swift, smooth leaps, their supple, easy movements.

I soon learned you had to be supple to be suc- cessful. And to be supple you just have to be fit. Start the day right.
