LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Rugby Refereeing
(The Editor, China Mall)
Sir,Much has been written in the local papers of the stand- ard of Rugby in the Colony, and also the refereeing. There has been harsh criticism of both and in fairness, beautifully com- posed dowery epistles of the ability of the referees in their trendlines of these games,
But the whole trouble lies not in the players' ability-but the inability of these referees, to interpret the true laws of the game known as English Rugby Union-even the reporters must be lax in their knowledge of the laws, if they can write in auch glowing terms of the quali- ties of these referees. These individuals are good enough to Elve their services but they don't apparently consider it necessary 10 Improve their knowledge of the laws, and henee make it a better game for all concerned, and that means a fair deal to both sides.
Last Saturday, I witnessed a game at Happy Valley, which most pointedly showed that the referee concerned was biased to one team, to quote the least.
While on the
cubject of Rugby, the local Rugger club seem to have set reasons, for not admitting service
people to membership of their club. this a means of healthy sport, or
