Teachers And Parents

R T. R. Rowell's address to the

M Hongkong enthadassociation,

which was as much an exhortation as it was a homily, contained some rattling good sense which we are sure parents, in particular, will expect the Association's members to take to heart and act thereon. That teachers and' parents should be mutually aware of each other's interests in the welfare of schoolchildren has been increasingly emphasised in Britain, the United States, Australia and other countries of enlightened education since the war. Parent-Teacher organisations are com- mon in those countries and they are well recognised as being valuable con- tributing factors to the improvement of the child both at home and at school. Hongkong's Education Week has underscored the desire of parents to learn by personal contact and obser- vation in the schools how their children are being trained academical- ly and practicably for their adult life, and we feel that the undoubted success of Education Week should have given the Tenchors' Association great on- couragement to foster closer and more intimate relations with parents. And in opening the doors and classrooms 1 more frequently the teachers will auto- matically bring to the attention of the public the activities of their associa tion - an organisation about_which, quite clearly; all too little is known. This wook's annual meeting shed some light on lis aims and activities, as well as its problems. But they 'should be "älked in publié to a much greater ex- tent for the teachers are concerned

sands of children--and that is a matter of considerable public interest. There are many good reasons why parents should display some enthusiasm about the activities of the Teachers' Associn- tion, but the onus is upon the teachers to stimulate that interest. The Asso ciation is seeking suitable head- quarters wherein they could, among other things, hold regular gatherings with parenta and discuss mutual prob- lems concerning the schoolchildren. Is there any reason why the Association should not hope for financial support from parents for this project if the teachers display a willing desire to foment closer relations with the general public? Education Week and Mr Rowell's plea to the teachers have opened up new opportunities for closer exchange of views and interest in the well-being of the Colony's schoolchildren. The initiative, however, rests with the Teachers' Association. We should be extremely surprised if parents failed to react favourably to the suggestion of establishing more Parent-Teacher Associations, and we are confident that if some of the fea- tures of Education Week, notably that of the Open Day, were to be practised more frequently, many benefits would be derived by parents, teachers and children. Mr Rowell offered the Teachers' Association many excellent suggestions, but none more stimula- ting or more likely to produce worthy results than that teachers should conse ~to behave like hörmits and should, in,

stead, come out of their cloistered- seclusion so that people can appreciate
