Selectors' Second Bests Put Up The Best Game Against The Swedes

By "SPIV”

An almost completely overhauled Hongkong XI retained the last shred of the Colony's soccer reputation with a magnificent show against the visiting Swedish Djurgardens team yesterday.

The Swedes were forced to fight every inch of the way for their 4-2 victory, and although they were unlucky on several occasions, particularly when three cer- tain winners hit the goalposts, it was largely the determined and gallant resistance put up by the local boys that kept the score down.

Shaken by a first minute goal, scored by Jeppson who bustled the hall into the net between two hesitating defenders, Hongkong were outplayed in the first 30 minutes of the game, conceding only two goals thanks largely due to the good work put up by Lai Wai at left back, Soong Ling-sing at centre-half and Kwok Ying-kee at right-half. Then came a head-on collision between Soong Ling-sing and Cederborg and both left the field with cuts on the eye.

QUICK

The scene is now set for the final desperate scrambles for seventeen places in the Third Round proper for the FA Cup competition. These places mean a lot to the struggling, financially-embarrassed Third Divi- sion and Non-League clubs, for it gives them the right to go into the hat on Monday, December 11, with the 1st and 2nd Division aristocrats. And that means money.
