BARBARA DAVIES — the "YOUNG-

TIMER"-finds out what's new- cat and smartest for, other youngtimers in buying their autumn hats.

3

Yes, it's not only the clothes for the unlier-20's that are get- ting smarter. Hats, too, aro much prettier..

The people who make them seem to have had a change of heart. This season's hats are designed with the youngtimer in mind. And that doesn't mean the traditional pork-ple style, trimmed with a diamal feather (you know the kind, worn straight for family out- ings; on one side for gayer occasions). The new shapes are basically simple; basically bright.

Trimming Strikes A New Note

Trimming details strike a new note. In handknit collections of suits and dresses New York, Velvet, braid and silk rib bon accents are three types that look particularly interesting. Most frequently, designers use them as finishing touches to basic silhouettes in wool-nub and silk ribbon at collars, pocket naps, etc.

They agree on dark gray too-elephant gray or slate gray, specifically, to keep up with The charcoal group. In addition, some mention the wine to plum group; emerald green and mossy or olivey greens; and warm, but not too bright gold.

Although boste one and two-piece silhouettes make up the great majority in each collection, there are a few notable 1950 design touches: Low-hipline pecket flaps to suggest a long-torso silhouette, for example, and horseshoe necklines:

The low-neckline types, and niore in lacey or metallic kults, offer opportunities to sell beautiful dressy handknits, àr well as basics.

Decorative Silk Ribbon

Silk ribbon, knitted-in as #decorative accent to knitted suits and dresses, gives a new and individual look to some autumn handknits. A one-piece dress of nubby wool, for example, is horizontally striped all the way down by the use of silk ribbon in two contrasting colours.

Ribbon is also used for tiny, all-over motifs, as in the short-sleeved sult Jacket which matches a slim skirt with simulated By-front effect-another newsy style point here, Buttons are hand-worked in slik, too,
