New screw-cutting technique developed

A now capstan and turrot lathe screw-cutting technique for threads too large to be produced by solfoponing dichards has boon recently developed by H. W. Ward, Ltd., in associa- tion with A. C. Wickman, Ltd., Wimot Divi-, sion.

Hitherto, threads of the size in question have been produced on capstan and turret lathes by chasing tools made from highspeed steel, employed at a cutting speed of from 30 to 50 f.p.m., depending on the materials being cut.

The inability of the culting points of high-speed steel chasers to withstand heavy restricted the duty seriously cutting speed, and also reces- slisted a considerable number of light cuts to provide the full Bread form.

By the use of the newly developed cutting tools, cutting speeds as high as 500 f.p.m. have been reached on steel, and 200 f.p.m. on cast iron. In addition, it was found that the Wimet tool enabled much heavier cuts to be taken.
