COOL RESPONSE TO

MEDIATION PLAN IN KOREA

Insistence on withdrawal

of North Korean troops

Lake Success, July '17, India's plan for a negotiated peace in Korea on the basis of Josef Stalin's reply to New Delhi's offer of mediation drew a cool response in the United Nations today.

A spokesman said the UN Secretary-General, Trygve Lie, had not been in- formed on the exchange of notes between the Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Stalin and the texts of the interchange were not available here.

However, Sir Bonegal Rau, chief of the Indian delegation, indicated that Stalin's reply, delivered to Mr. Nehru on Sunday, was correct in broad torms as it was published in a New Delhi nowspaper. According to that version, Marshal Stalin made admission of Communist China to the Security Council the price for his agreement to mediation in Karea.

The consensus

de- among legations here was that if the Chinese Communists' claim to the scat was submitted to the Security Connell now, it would receive not more than three votes-the Indian, the Yugoslav and, if they wile end their boycott, the ballot of the Rush. Seven vatns are required.
