Everything is going to be all right

By DENIS COMPTON

I'm sitting on top of the world again, or rather, I'm lying on it at the moment. Why? Bo-

cause everything is going to be all right for mo and my crickot.

After the unhappiest days of my life. I've been told that with any luck at all I'll be playing again before the season is out. And that's all I've wanted to hear.

My wife, Doris, was the first to tell me. That's the way it should be,

I was lying in a sort of daze- the effect of the drugs, I suppose and Doris was saying something to me.

Syddenly I realised what she was telling me. Sho'd just been talking to Mr. Tucker, the sur- who had performed the operation that morning and what he'd said brought me out of my daze with a jerk.

gron

The operation, he'd told her had been a complete sucase much more so than had beet hoped. They bad managed withaut much difficulty, to re move the little plece of chipped bone that had been causing all the trouble.

As I say, that was when the damage was done, but it wasn't unili 1947 that I had any more trouble,

Then, bowling against. Lan- cashire at the end of the season, my knee "went" again, without any warning.

Another operation followed and thought that was that, but it wasn't.

A lot of people have been tell-

me me that if I hadn't pinyed

ing

football last season this business wouldn't have happened. Maybe

they're right. It's certain that if I'd never started playing football it wouldn't. But look what 13. have missed.·

And they hadn't really expect- DAVIS CUP: ed to be able to do that without anather and much more serious operation.

I nearly jumped out of bed with exellement. But the pain in my knee and the weight of the sort of cradle around it kept m down.. I don't know if you can realise just how I felt.
