MOTORING NEWS AND VIEWS

pleasing exterior lines
BY OUR MOTORING 'EDITOR
A car that has tremendous appeal in the United States, and is, dollar for dollar, an excellent buy, is the Pontiac 1950, made by General Motors, which was road-tasted by the “China Mail” recently.
The new Pontiac, for which Triangle Motors are the focal agents, combines excellent per- formance with a pleasing, interior and typically American exterior, yet retaining certain features which have become characteristics of the Red Indian "Chieftain" mark.

A novel
gasket material
More than a year ago it was announced, from France, that a novel and interesting gasket material had been developed, based on an aluminum-foll farin- ate bonded with a special synthe- tic resin.
Rights for the manufacture of this fall-mass, and of gaskets mado from it in Great Britain, are now vested In Plexcal, Lid., of Haddenham, Bucks.
According to the purpose for which the gasket is to be used, the thickness of the individual falls employed will vary from 0.1 of a millimetre down to half of one- thousandth of an inch.
The total thickness of the laminated masa may be varied at will, but, for the majority of pur- poses, 1/32 in, appears to be most effective; unless a different thick- nens is specified, all gaskets aro cut from this " gauge."
The properties of the foll lamin- ate are such that not only may it readily be cut to shape with a pair of domestic scissors, but, even in the mass production of parti cular gasketa, it requires only the simplest and cheapest of tools.
In use, its capacity for plastic deformation is such that it will [readily take up all surface forms against which I is bolted, not even excluding machining marke; a gas-light seal le thus ossured:
In this regard the plastic ad- besive also plays a part, for, un- der pressure, same slight exuda- tion occurs at the cut edges and here, under the influence of heat, hardoning of the resin, occurs, thus bonding the edges together and furthermore sealing the laminate against penetration by gas under pressure.
