Plan for arming civilians in Malaya rejected

London, May 17,

The Colonial Secretary, Mr. James Griffiths, today turned down the idea of arming civilians in Malaya to deal with guerilla attacks. "Large numbers of auxiliary police, including vil- lage guards, are already issued with arms and this policy is being extended", he told the House, of Commons.

"An unduly wide distribu- tion of arms to civilians would provide the terrorists with a target which, it successfully attacked, would supply them with much needed arms and ammunition."

Mr. James Harrison (Labour) had asked the Minister's opinion on the demand for a wide din tribution of arma to civilians in Malaya during the present trou- bles there.

Mr. Leonard Garamans (Con- servative) asked what was the object of Mr. Malcolm Mac- Donald's visit to Australia,
