King Phumiphon assumed full regal powers when he was crowned king under the ceremonial nine tiered umbrella in the Royal palace. The coronation was accompanied by a mixture of ancient and modern sounds the blare of trumpets, boating of drums, music of the pipe and conch shell and the roar of 30 fighter planes of the Royal Thai Air Forco. To these the army and navy added their salutos. The ceremony, which began at 10 a.m. and lasted two hours, was held in the Royal palace where the King put on the crown for the first time and was enthroned under the state umbrella.
