Sweeping emergency regulations designed to prevent subversive activity, protect public peace and prevent subotage came into operation in Hong Kong yesterday by order of the Governor- in-Council.

The regulations, enforced- under the Emergency (Principal) Re- gulations, 1949, provide stiff penalties for the possession of arms and for those who associate with persons carrying arms.
