During 1949, 176,779 persons were killed or in- jured in 146,736 road accidents in Great Britain. This was the highest total of road casualities for any year since the war, and was 23,382, or 15 per cent, more than for 1948. The deaths numbered 4,773, an Increase of 260 compared with the previous year, though less than for any other year since the war.
