Government tells

troops to unload tied-up vessels

London, April 24.

The Labour Government today ordered troops to unload ships tied up in London port by a wildcat dock- ers' strike denounced by cabinet ministers as Commun- ist-inspired,

The government decision to use soldiers and sailors to keep food and 'other goods moving was made after the walkout threatened to halt all operations in the sprawling dockyards,

Almost 1,000 soldiers and sailors, stationed in the dockyards since yesterday, were ordered to go to work on 09 ships immobilised by the strike over an intru- sion dispute.

More than 4,500 dockers joined the strikers over the week-end. bringing the number idle to 12,489. The total working fores in the London docks is 27,000, but only between 15,000 to 20,000 are employed on any given dny.

There was no indication that the mushrooming strike would end soon.Associated Press.

U.S. Govt may help to get food to famine regions

Washington, April 24.

United States officials said today the government may help private relief agencies to get Amori- con food for famine areas of Communist China where · 2,000,000 to 4,000,000 face death by starvation.

Government assistance, they said, would hinge on the ability of the agencies to show two things:

1. If they can get Communist

permission for relief activities.

2.

If they can raise enough money in the United States

Sharp attack on Govt spending of resources

CHALLENGE

TORY

London, April 24. Mr. Winston Churchill charged today that Britain's Socialist Government had engag- ed in the last five years in "the most amazing dissipation of national resources in the record of any civilised community of our size.”

He told Parliament, as the budget debate opened, "Not only have we used every available re- source and asset on which the government. could lay its hands,-not only has the future been mortgaged in every way-but we have enjoyed during this period of extravagance upwords of £1,700,000,000 of financial aid from the United States."

Mr. Churchill said the Labour Government spont а "colossal" £19,000,000,000 in the past five years, and would spend another £4,000,000,- 000 this year.

He added, "But the £4,000, 000,000 we are to and this year. owing to the depreciation of aur money, are not worth much more

than £3,000,000,000 in compuri- son with the goods and services |they would have represented

three years ago."

He said that although 42 per cent of the government's tax ro- venue was provided by income tax and surtax, the fall in the purchasing power of the pound sterling is tax on the wage corners of the utmost severity.

Mr. Churchill continued. "If we take the wages earned and the pensions drawn in the last finan- cial year, and deduct four slill-

ngs in the pound from them, we shall see how much in these Ave years of Socialist government has bren taken from the wege

earners.

Gigantic scale

drow up the 1950-51 budget, will answer the Tory leader's charges on Monday night.

The debate is taking place in the Ways and Means Committee.

Mr. Churchill said the budget must be examined against the unchallengeable background that expenditures will increase irr Fisrably, and Marshall aid will stop ir the near future. German, Japanese, and other competition will rapidly and steadily increase. Taxation, direct and Indirect, has reached its limit. ...

The voles will be taken on Wednesday, when the tax re solutions of the budget are re- ported back to the full House of Commons.

Mr. Churchill declared: "I sub- mit that it is intolerable, any taxation should be imposed now

at a time like this. We shall feel

it our duty to vote against both these now taxes.
