Empire Orwell, Army's most modern troopship, leaves Colony today
The troopship Empire Orwell—the most up-to-date-
example of the way in which British sorvico- men and dependants can be carried in peace- time with comfort on long sea voyages—will leave today.

The 18,036-ton former German passenger liner, built at Hamburg and named Pretoria, is taking back to the United Kingdom person- nel on furlough or re-assignment and re- patriates.
The Empire Orwell, which; arrived here over the week- end with replacements for the Colony's garrison, was one of the ships assigned to the Unit- ed Kingdom by the Tripartite Commission at the end of the war in Europe.
She was refitted at Newcastle for service as troopship. But her Benson boilers, which were an experiment by the German builders, could not be satisfac- torily maintained in service. liner was consequently Ind up while
technical investigations
were made to overcome the difficulty.
The decision to install new bollers and to adapt the main ninchinery and fit new materials wus met with several dificulties It would have mennt undertaking major reconversion job at a time when the shipyards in Bri- tain were fully occupied with the tremendous task of reconverting for normal commercial service the huge fleet of passenger liners and other vessels which had been requisitioned for Government service during the war.
There was also considerable dimeulty in Anding a suitablo shipyard to handle the troopship. The possibility of towing the vessel to a foreign yard was also ruled out. Eventually, she W08 taken to Southampton.
During her prolonged roosting undergoing refitting, the Empire Orwell was given speelal atten- tion to bring her as nearly as possible into line with the new post-war standards for troopships.
The Empire Orwell according ly represents the most up-to- date oxample of the way in which it is proposed to carry Britlah servicemen and families an long sea voyages in peace- 'time.

The most impressive feature is the first-class lounge, which also

At the helm of the Empire Orwell is Captain A. C. G.
