The estimated cost of the Colony's education 'in
the coming year is $20,000,000; ~ This is made up of such figures as $5,000,000 for Government Schools; $8,000,000 for Grant- aided. Schools: $2,300,000 for Subsidised Schools: $4,300,000 for new buildings and other amounts for loans, assistance, the University, etc.
Of these, $5,000,000 only shows as the estimate for the Education Department, whereas a further $11,000,000 to be spent on schools are hidden in Subventions and the rest in the Public Works Vote.
This arrangement has pro- duced confusion in the public mind with regard to the pro- vision for Education in the Colony Budget and is exem- plified by the following recent statement in the "Wen Wel Pao". "The estimate for edu- cation was only $5,000,000
