TOWARD RED RECOGNITION
Ottawa,, December 18,
Reports out of London today that all British Com- monwealth countries would recognise Cóm- munist China in a fow day'a timo wore given a cold reception in Ottawa. In fact,, it was learned on the highest authority that thora would be no recognition so far as Canada is concerned until after the Commonwealth conference in Ceylon next month.
A high government official said there had been no development to warrant immediate recog- nition of the Red regime. He said Canada planned to discuss the whole matter with other Commonwealth governments when they met at Colombo on January 9.
However, this did not necessarily
moan that Canada would recognise the Communist gay- ernment immediately after the conference. Canadian government officials ation in China would have to be have frequently said the situ carefully studied before any de ciston could bo reached. Ta particular, they said they would first have to be satisfied that the Communist regime was free from outside control and had effective control over China.
However, on November 10, the External affairs Minister, Lester Pearson, told the House of Com- mons that in due course Canada would have to "recognise the situation which confronts us" in China.
