ROMULO CALLS FOR CHANGE IN WEST'S POLICY IN ORIENT

New York, Nővember 1. Brigadier-General Carlos P. Romulo, President of the United Nations Assembly, called today for an end of the old Western concept of looking on the Orient primarily as a military and strategic problem.

The Philippines diplomat said the big problem in -Asia. today is improvement of economic and social conditions which are breeding illiteracy, chronic starvation, ill health and discontent -"some of the most explosive raw materials of revolution," General Romulo told the National Foreign Trade Con- vention at the Waldorf- Astoria:

"What we need, above all, at this stage is a change in attitude

towards Asia.

"The problem of Asia must be approached in the context of its own interest and not of the in- terest of any power in relation to Asia

med up. It can be channelled to constructive uses only after it has reached the goal of its mighty Sweep."

General Romulo praised the complementary United Nations and United States plans for tech-

ical assistance to the under-developed areas.

So That's What Makes Us Tough

Frankfurt, November 1. If the British to better, A they would not be so tough politically, the widely read "Frankfurter Neue Presse" sald today in an article on British food and cooking.

"A nation, which puts up with its present sort of fare can bear a lot of other trou- bles." the paper's London correspondent declared.

India Might Be Meeting Ground For World Peace

Chicago, November 1.

India might be the meeting ground for world peace, the Prime Minister of India, Pandit Nehru, conceded in a University of Chicago round-table radio broadcast here.

He made the statement in response to a question from Mr. Robert Redfield, Professor of An- thropology at the University of Chicago, as to the possibility of India providing a common ground in the cold war between East and West. Pandit Nehru replied, "I do not like this idea of India be coming a leader in any such" effort because thinking that way brings difficulties and people react strongly to it."

"But to say that India should work to its utmost capacity to that end, I can understand. - - It has a certain advantage in that it has no burdens from the past.
