BRITISH BOXING BOOSTED BY SANDS-MEAD FIGHT
W. India Beaten By An Innings
Bombay, October 16.
The Commonwealth Cricket team won the second match of their indian tour today, heating Western India at Ahmedabad by an innings and 122 rans with a day to spare.
The Commonwealth XI, who made 347 runs on Saturday, shut Western India out today for 170 and 55.
It was a bowlers' day on the matting wicket. George Pepe, former England bowler, and Des- mond Fitzmaurice, the Australian, erho began the attack, mach took a wicket in their opening over.
London, October 16.
A lot was done for British boxing in the Harringay |
Arena this week by the Australian, Dave Sands, and the American, Pete Mead, in their international middleweight contest.
These two boxers, the coloured Australian and the cowboy from Arkansas, gave the 8,000 specta- rors a real treat. Most of them voted the fight the best that they had seen for years, if not ever.
It was not that it was such a skilful contest. Sands was ob- viously the better boxer, but that the two of them went 10 rounds hammer and tongs; hitting-each other with all they had not for all they were worth.
They did not seek clinches or try to avoid going into battle. They just traded blows like two) men fighting over a girl. It was movie stuff.
