Appeal For Funds For Orphanages In China
An urgent appeal for funds to tide over Ameri- can-Oriental Friendship Association-sponsored orphanage homes in China in the approach- ing period of uncertainty was made by Dr. J. R. Saunders yesterday.
He arrived here from Chungking during the week- end to raise the necessary funds. The direc-
tor of the AOFA was accompanied by his wife, who is the editor of the bi-lingual maga- zine, "Asia-America Calling". Dr. and Mrs. Saunders are here as representatives of the AOFA which co-operates with various Christian groups in the building of Model Centres for the care of orphan chil- dren and in producing litera- ture and films to bring about better understanding and friendship between the chil-

76, Dr. Saunders frels that the rest of his life should be directed toward the development of a few well-placed strategic centres which will paint the way to the best methods of caring for orphan children in the Orient,
"First of all," he said, "the property should be owned and controlled by some dependable local Christian group. The friends in the Orient should raise at least 50 per cent of the necessary funds. In this way, the project will be from the beginning indi- geneous, and will rapidly become self-supporting There should be plenty of land for agricultural and industrial developments. Victims of the Chungking fire, which Mrs. Saunders said was far more, disastrous than any wartime confagration, are given first com sideration.
"It costs only HK$800 to spon- ser a child for a year," said Mrs. Saunders, "and this covers food. clothing, medical care, schooling, and vocational training. I wish you could see the boys we rescued from the streets only a few months ago. They have changed so rapidly that you would never guess they had recently been beggars.
