The event was portended last week when Lu Hon,

in response to a request to go to Chungking

to see Chiang Kai-shek, instead sent two very junior officials—an open gesture of contempt and defiance.

He evidently regarded Chiang as the spider invit-

This probably hastened the long simmering revolt.

Some political quarters in Can- tun were inclined to blame Chlung fur his handling of the affair, Their argument is that more de- ileate manoeuvres might have won Lu Han to the Nationalist side or at least kept him on the fence. until a coup against him could have been exeuted successfully.

MALAYAN REDS AWAITING OUTSIDE HELP

Tokyo, September 5. Communists who have been in armed rebellion in Malaya for the past 15 months are deeply entrenched in the jungles awaiting rescue from the outsido, the British South East Asia Commissioner-General, Mr. Malcolm Mac- Donald, told a press conference. Mr. MacDonald said the armed forces of the Communists in Malaya are composed of 95 per cent of Chinese. He said they have fail- ed to win any active support for their attempt to use force to impose an alien government among any appreciable numbers of Malayans or Indians and have not attracted the mass of Chinese who have been settled in Malaya for a long time.

Mr. MacDonald discussed the Hong Kong situa- tion only briefly. He answered questions about Hong Kong's future by stating that the recent declaration of the British Defence Minister that Hong Kong would be defend- ed against any act of aggression still stands. Mr. MacDonald insisted that be called "nationalist" movements his visit here is purely in- in Malaya by marked groups formal. Then he added that to better their conditions.
