The following was told by Dr. Barton to the United Prein) Aboard Velero IY off Santa Cruz Island, California,

August 17.

I did not have a bad time on Tuesday on my benthoscope dive. I suffered from cold and glowing organisms flickering up and down outside in the dark made me dizzy for a time. But I did not suffer from lack of oxygen as I did on Monday.

Phosphorescent animals were most numerous abouf

2,000 or 2,500 feet. I would describe them as like fireflies on a mid-summer's night. could not identify all of them but many of them were jellyfish. Saw some lantern fishes, I am sure. I made about 25 little sketches of the arrangements of lights I sow. Some of the lights were so bright that they were reflected inside the benthoscope.
