SHANGHAI Another Busy Day TENSION RISES

British, U.S. Naval Units BRITISH PAPER Move Down To Woosung

REDS DRIVE SLACKENS

Shanghai, April 26.

Heavy British and American naval units today moved from their usual moorings in the placid, muddy Whangpoo River —which runs through Shanghai-to the mouth of the har- bour at Woosung as the exodus from the threatened metro- polis continued in full swing.

The warships which took up new positions some 10 miles down-river from the heart of the city included the British cruiser London, still bear- ing the scars of recent Communist shelling in the Lower Yangtse, the El Dorado, Flagship of Vice-Admiral Oscar C. Badger, Commun- der of the United States West Pacific Fleet, the British destroyer Constance and the United States transport Chilton, the floating base of some 600 United States Marines.

The British destroyer Black Swan, another of the vessels involved in the recent Yangtao incidents at prosent holds a lone watch on Shanghai from the famous "Battleship Row", directly opposite the tooming Bund. A British Navy announcement today indicated that British vessels will re- main in their present berths to render what assistance they can to Commonwealth nationals during the change-over period.

The American Navy, in announcing the movements of its units down-river, said that small United States craft and borthing facilities at the United States naval onnexe are being retained and those craft are sufficient to handle all United States nationals—some 4,000—now in Shanghai.

Today's navol movements followed an American state- ment 24 hours earlier that after a re-appraisal of plans for the protection of Ameri- cans, necessitated by the

cent Yangise incidents, It had been decided to move all heavy units from close anchorage in the Whangpoo to the Lower Yangise.
