Of The Doubt
A Royal naval dock-yard Chi-kwong. detective; Lai stood in the dock before Mr.
Hin-shing Lo at Central yes- terday on the charge of lar ceny of a wrist-watch from a laundry room on HMS Bel- inst.
Wong Lin Chu, laundryman on that on board the ship, sold January 31 a party of detectives came to search the ship.
After the second search of the laundry room, he found his wrist- watch missing from hla box: Ho reported the case to his Number
One.
Later he
was, shown i
watch, which he recognised as his, by Sergeant Dempster, who was: in charge of the party.
Sergeant Dempster stated, that after receiving the report he was following the accused about two paces behind along the corridor of the ship, when he saw him fling up his right arm. He saw a watch in the air and picked it up.
This WER claimed by
Wong to be his
Defendant pleaded--not, "guilty and refuted the sergeant's state- tent as being false saying that
he and the defendant were not on good terms.
Remarking that was reasonablo substantial doubt in the evidener given, the magistrate discharged the defendant and ordered that the watch be returned to the owner.

Debate Wanted
Sir,-Your correspondent, Mr. M.A. da Silva, claims that he has an overwhelming case against any control whatsoever concerning wates for accommodation and ser- vice at hotels, supported by facts and figures, opportunity to repre- ment which was denied him by the Advisory committee.
I agree with Mr. da Silva that the point at issue is one which should be decided by public vote rather than by a body with un
fcial majority.

Should your newspaper feel that it has enough space for Mr. da Silva to present his case in full and also that of the rest- denta as a member and former chairman of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Residents Association should be glad to join Mr, de Silva in arranging for a platform nt which the issue could be pub- Ilely debated and, if others better qualified than myself should not come forward, personally to meet his challenge,
