PEACE HOPES IN CHINA GET BOOST Battleship

Favourable Red Reception For Non-Partisan Peace Mission

Nanking Optimistic Dr. Sun To See Li?

Nanking, February 17. Hopes for peace ran high in war-torn China today, following a favourable report from Peiping about the Communist accept- ance of the Nationalist non-partisan peace delegation from Shanghai.

Even officials close to acting-President Li Tsung- jen, leading proponent of a peace policy, seemed optimistic.

The latest report from Peiping said that the non- partisan delegation is choosing a representa- tive-probably Dr. Shao Li-tse, ex-ambassa- dor to Moscow-to go into the interior of Communist-occupied North_China to Inter- vlow the Red leader, Mao Tse-tung, himself.

If the meeting is successful, the non-partisan delegation's mission to fix the time and place for official negotiation will be achieved.

The delegation is slaying in Peiping's famous six-nation "hos- tel with the Communist Mayor Mr. Yeh Chien-ying. Usually, the hostel is reserved for honoured guests.

Eighth Dominion Now Being Forged

London, February 17.

The framework" for Britain's eighth Dom

inion was forged today beside Victoria Falls in Africa when leaders of Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia and Nyas- saland unanimously agreed to federate under one constitution.

Thus the dream of Cecil Rhodes, Britain's great empire builder of the 19th century, of a giant African Commonwealth under the Bri- tish flag, moved one step nearer fulfilment. The now dominion which may rise out of the Vic- toria Falls mooting will comprise 475,000 square miles, an area about five times the sixe of Britain.

According to British news papers, the moving spirits of the agreement were Mr. Roy Welensky, a member of North- ern Rhodesia's Legislative Council, and Sir Godfrey Hug- gins, surgeon, who has been Rhodesia's Premier for 15 years."

A bigger conference will work out details and submit them to London for Cabinet approval.
