COAL WILL KEEP OUR CARS

RUNNING FOR A

By A. C. Arend

While it is known that petrol shortagos have arisen. from a number of causes which nood not be entered into hore, the extent of development which is anticipated from cool carbonisation and hydrogenation is probably much greater than is generally appreciated.

This development can only partly be attributed to the exhaustion of existing oil fields, or mane- tary exchange difficulties between contracting countries, It became a matter of necessity with Germany and Japan during the war years, due to lack of potential sources of crude oil.

Although actual statistics for Japan are not forthcoming, it is known that approximately half the liquid fuel used by Ger- many hailed from coal and coni-tar. This may shed a different light on the subject. but from the American aspect most attention is devoted to ollfeld exhaustion, and because of which dwindling reserves, the coal process is expected to balance the difference.
