Nanking, December 1.
Two Nationalist Army groups were reported tonight attempting to
establish a new defence line across the approaches
to the
lower Yangtse valley on the Huai River, 100 miles North West of Nanking.
A new river defence line guarding the capital is reported under construc- tion on the Southern bank of the Huoi anchored on Pengpu and gar- risoned by the bulk of some 80,000 men of the Sixth and Eighth Army groups.
A large percentage of this last major Nationalist force between the Com- munist armies and Nanking is said to be composed of recruits and remnants of units evacuated from Hulutaa.

Seething with bitterness, 31 Chinese and three Euro- peans, the crow of the Panamian freightor Canonbar, complained of being starved aboard the vessel for nearly six weeks, on their or- rivál ́hare yesterday from North Korea.
"If the necessary steps are not taken to safeguard our interests, it will be necessary for the case to be settled by the Marine Court in Hong Kong," some of the officers told the "China Mail."
