US-EUROPE TREATY IN 1949
Military Alliance To Cost $2,000 Million Annually
US ELECTIONS AWAITED
Washington, October 24.
United States military and diplomatic planners have set their sights on mid-1949 for the conclusion of a treaty binding the United States, Canada and Europe's free nations in a defensive mili- tary alliance.
Authoritative sources said that the project, expected to cost upwards of US$2,000,000,000 a year, had reached the final drafting stage, but progress must await the outcome of the American Presidential elec- tions. They said the proposal could not be carried further without a green light from the next President.
Planning has been on a bi-partisan basis but is currently at the point where the next chief executive, whether he is Mr. Truman or Mr. Dewey, must take over its direction.

Canton, October 24.
The depreciated gold yuan hold relatively steady last week and the problem of getting food began to demand more attention in Canton. While the Gold Yuan to Hong Kong, dollar quota- tion was seldom more than two to one, uncon- trolled food prices rose sharply and many con- trolled items disappeared except for token sales.

The Hong Kong Chinese Chamber of Commerce has 'sent a sup- plementary potition to the Secretary of State for the Colonies through the Governor of Hong Kong in connection with the Debtor and Creditor Ordinance.
The Chamber contended in its original petition that the Ordinance was not a fair compromise. The petition was taken by Mr. Percy Chen, barrister-at-law, to London where a conference was held at the Colonial Office.
