Shanghai, August 2.
Big Notes Flown Into Canton
The new sweeping economic, measures reported to have been approved by Prosidont Chiang Kai-shek at the recent Makanshan confer- once will probably be' officially promulgated this wook, according to Chinese press reports. These are said to be entirely different from all similar mea- sures enforced in the past, das that they lay emphasis on action rather than regulation. It is reported that Ghunghài, the country, Binancial and econo mle centre, has been designated us "guinea pig" for the new drive to abilise the nation's economy.
On the basis of Chinese reporta ; it la belleved that the new econo- mle policy includes tenformant re- visions to ext ting exchange and trade controls, a tighter control [of the operations of banks and |oller Anancial institutions, and a tightening-up of the money mar- kot,

Racial Fights In Liverpool

between 1ghts
white and coloured men in Liverpool fast Several persons were night. injured and sent to hospital, while several arrests were made.
The fight broke out shortly be fore knight when a gung seized |
Negro from the Colonial Office hostel steps and started to beat bin. His cries brought other Negroes from the building, and a battle began in which knives were drawn and bottles and bricks thrown until almost every whi- dow of the three storey building Wi
shattered.
Police du hed up to the scene This

and dispersed the Aghters, moraing. police cars their patrol of the area.
The issue of the new notes broke the week-old stability of the money market and cauead the Hong Kong dollar to rise slowly from CNS770,- 000 to close to the previous million mark.
The Central Bank of China has in the past few
days taken in some CN$100,000 million in emali nutes in ex- change for big denominations. it la
