The National Coal Board, operator of Britain's publicly owned coal pits, reported today that its first year of operation of the nation's mines resulted in a loss of £23,255,587.
The operations for the period ending Dec. 31, 1947, however, included the expenditure' of approx- imately £19,000,000 capital largely to begin modernisation and reequip- ment of some of the older mines.
