Jewish Planes Bomb Arabs.

Fail To Free Ambushed Truck Convoy Jerusalem Swept By Gunfire

Jerusalem, Mar. 27.

Four Jewish planes bombed Arab concentrations south of Bethle- hem in a day before Easter battle but failed to free a convoy caught in a mazo of Arab roadblocks, the Royal Air Force reported tonight. This was the first official report of the use of aircraft on such a scale in the Arab-Jewish civil war, al- though there have been previous instances of Jewish recon- naissance flights.

Gunfire swept Jerusalem only a few hours before church bella were to ring for Faster Sunday. Bullets whined near the church of the Holy Sepulchre, said to be the site of the tomb of Christ's resurrection.

The developing convoy battle was waged near Solomon's Pool, The Arabs poured heavy gunfire on the 30 vehicles they hnd sur- rounded.

One British military armoured car sent to the scene was disabled, The Arabs hammered five Jewish armoured cars believed to con- tain reinforcements dispatched to help the convoy. Two trucks of the convoy were on fire

Police said the Arabs manned roadblocks between Bethlehen and Kfor Ezlon. An RAF pilot sighted the Jewish

aircraft cir-

cling over the battleground.

A Government spokesman sald the convoy travelled southward from Jerusalem to Kfar ⚫Ezion before dawn without reporting to British security forces. It was making the return journey when the Arab attack began.
